He was ordained in 1895〔The Leeds Mercury (Leeds, England), Friday, February 1, 1895; Issue 17730.〕 〔''University Intelligence''The Times Friday, Feb 01, 1895; pg. 7; Issue 34489; col F〕 and after a curacy at St John’s, Richmond 〔(Church Details )〕 was a Chaplain to the British Armed Forces and instructor from 1901 until 1918. 〔(London Gazette 26 November 1918 )〕 He served in the South African War and in Aldershot, Egypt, Dublin, Deepcut, Malta 〔(Malta Family History )〕 and the Great War where he was mentioned in despatches. He joined the fledgling RAF Chaplaincy Service 〔(Supplement to the Edinburgh Gazette June 5 1919 )〕 as Assistant Chief Chaplain〔(London Gazette 13 August 1920 )〕 and became its Archdeacon (Chaplain-in-Chief) 〔(29 May 1928 )〕 in 1926.
